America, ice cream, and the Fourth of July in the SGV
It’s usually portrayed as Asian food heaven but is there anywhere more all-American than the SGV? Beyond the dumplings, hot pots, and pastries there are tacos and burria. But before the McMansions, there were low-riders in Whittier and the Chicano movement in El Monte, not to mention Jackie Robinson and white picket fences in Pasadena, as well as places like Fair Oaks Soda Fountain and Fosselman’s.
And fireworks. One stand has gone up on Valley and New in Alhambra.
Although they are outlawed in most of SoCal, as of 2015 “safe-and-sane” fireworks stands were legal in Alhambra, Azusa, El Monte, Monterey Park, South El Monte, Temple City, Rosemead…
Go get some and have a blast–but please don’t set them off near my house.
